Abstract
A method for the induction of pollen callus at a very high frequency in barley anther culture has been achieved by adding Ficoll to a liquid culture medium. The Ficoll was used to help the pollen calli float on the surface, thus resulting in better aeration and growth of the calli. The viability of the pollen calli was greatly affected by the pH and osmolality of the medium. The pollen calli, which were induced by the Ficoll medium, were able to develop into plants.
