| Abstract | This paper considers the performance and properties of building materials from the standpoint of the various physical and chemical processes involving water. It illustrates the organization of the work in the Materials Section of the Division of Building Research and summarizes some of the studies that have been completed. It deals with structure formation by hydration reactions as for cementitious materials such as cement plaster and lime. The dimensional changes of porous materials associated with the physical processes of sorption and freezing of water are dealt with. The effect of water on the mechanical properties of porous materials is discussed from a phenomenological standpoint, and an attempt is made to show how such an approach can be very useful in the understanding and prediction of the performance of building materials. |
