Abstract
A detailed study of the crystallography of freshwater, columnar, S2, ice impacted by a free-fall spherical projectile is presented. It is shown that the 28 cm thick ice was punched out below the indentor by grain boundary sliding along the cracks, which formed throughout the ice below the indentor and which were mostly intra-crystalline in nature.
