Abstract | This paper examines the behaviour of a rigid, compliant, vertical cylinder in irregular waves. Tests have been carried with a rigid circular cylinder hinged at its base, and supported above the water surface by four horizontal springs. Springs of different stiffnesses were used to change the natural frequency of oscillation of the cylinder. The cylinder was tested in both fixed and compliant modes, using a variety of irregular waves. A sweep frequency test signal was also used to examine the frequency dependent characteristics of the cylinder response in detail. Frequency domain force coefficients are estimated from the measured forces. Interesting behaviour if observed in the pre- and post-resonance flow regimes. The applicability of force coefficients determined from fixed structures to compliant structures is investigated. Two different formulations of the equations of motion are solved in the i=time domain suing constant force coefficients, and compared with the measured response. |
