Abstract
Experimental observations were carried out on the deflection of a large plate with a concentrated load applied at the centre; of a large half-plate with a concentrated load applied at the free edge; and a large sectorial plate with a concentrated load applied at the tip. The results of this study were used to determine the rigidity modulus of ice from observations made in the field. Conclusions are drawn concerning the relative bearing strength of the centre- loaded and edge-loaded plates.
