Abstract | A new type of model ice is described in which the elastic modulus has been increased. This is done by flushing the concentrated solute from the growth interface with tank solution. Model tests of an icebreaker in this new ice show no change in resistance due to the change in modulus. Two mechanisms are given to explain this. One involves a change in the modulus due to cracks, the other is due to crushing. |
