Abstract | Two separate criteria must be considered in designing joists, strength and deflection. Because specified deflection limits for wood-joist floors were found to vary from building code to building code and from country to country the author looked into how stiff residential wood- joist floors should be. Excessive vibrations are the main drawback with joists with considerable deflection. An experimental investigation of residential floors in Norway is described. Floors were rated for satisfactory performance by housewives and by a team from the Norwegian Building Research Institute. The ratings turned out to be closely related to measured deflections under a certain concentrated load. The results were compared with an earlier investigation in the USA with reasonable agreement. Tests were carried out to determine the deflection of completely assembled joist floor systems. The results are used as a basis for the calculation of deflection limits. Tables of wood-joist floors are given. |
