Abstract
Electrical potentials generated during the freezing of pure water and moist soils have been measured in the laboratory. The freezing potential in water was ice-positive and of the order of a few volts; the potentials in soils were of the order of a few hundred millivolts (< or equals 1 V), and the sign changed with time under the influence of surface charges on the mineral particles.
