Abstract
This paper discusses the need for reliable information flow and knowledge accessibility. Soft technologies are reviewed for potential application in design, construction, operation and maintenance of North American buildings. Of the soft technologies, knowledge-based expert systems promise greater information accessibility in the building cycle. An expert system can act as advisor, assistant, or diagnostician on a wide variety of building-related topics. Examples of existing expert systems are identified and potential future developments are postulated.
