Abstract | Aluminum alloys inherently have low hardness and poor wear resistance, which limits their wear related applications. Particulate reinforced aluminum-based composites appear to offer a solution to this problem. However, the high cost for producing bulk metal matrix composites (MMC) is still a key factor in limiting their wider use. In this paper, gas dynamic spray (GDS) has been applied to form aluminumbased composites on an aluminum substrate. Alumina particulates were used as the reinforcement. The microstructures, hardness and sliding wear resistance of the MMC composite coatings have been investigated as a function of powder compositions and processing conditions. Excellent bonding between the deposit and the substrate was observed. The sliding wear resistance was significantly improved as compared with the substrate. |
