Abstract
Structures placed in deep snowcovers are subject to forces caused by the interruption of the downslope snowpack deformation components. The resulting creep pressures are often the primary design consideration. In this paper, accurate field data (pressures) and theoretical analysis of the problem using a linear creep law to define snow deformation are presented. Analytical expressions for the pressures are presented and it is demonstrated that the resulting linear theory underestimates the mean pressures by about 20%. Higher accuracy will require a non-linear deformation law.
