| Abstract | This report describes an assessment of background noise levels close to the exit section of the VTOL propulsion wind tunnel of the National Research Council, with the tunnel flow exhausting to the atmosphere. These studies were conducted in relation to the simulation of forward speed effects by directing the tunnel exhaust flow over a fan-inwing model, for noise studies.
The background noise levels were found to be generally high for the crossflow noise studies with a strong low frequency content. At a velocity greater than 100/sec the background noise levels were higher than the target levels in a wide frequency range. A comparison of the background noise levels with the fan-in-wing model noise levels under the same crossflow velocity has revealed that, the background obscured the fan noise in a wide frequency range. |
