Abstract
Collapse of structure due to removal of water from sepiolite and other layered silicates was studied. Data from three systems - sepiolite, hydrated C[3]S, and hydrated portland cement - are presented. Changes in mechanical properties and helium flow characteristics were correlated with collapse processes in sepiolite. Similarities in helium flow characteristics of the three sytems are discussed to elucidate the role of decomposition processes in microstructural collapse. The sepiolite system appeaers to have potential as a model for the study of collapse processes in other cementitious systems.
