Abstract | Some properties of building materials are structure- sensitive, some others structure-insensitive. Degree of crystallinity, grain structure, and pore structure are the most important microstructural characteristics that affect material behaviour. Specific (internal) surface and porosity are the factors that determine the moisture sorption characteristics of porous materials. Of particular interest are: among mechanical properties - stress-strain curve, modulus of elasticity, yield strength, ultimate strength, and creep; among thermal properties - dilatometric curve, thermogravimetric curve, density, porosity, calorimetric curve, and thermal conductivity. Available information on these properties of building materials is reviewed. |
