Abstract | Degradation of the starter affects the starting phase of the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) of the aircraft and even causes the APU to fail to start. This may lead to unexpected costs and increase the safety risk. Earlier works mostly focus on presenting the degradation trend of the starter rather than quantitative degradation level of the system. This paper establishes a physics-based transient model for the startup phase of the APU. The model takes into account both the starter and the gas turbine and connects the starter degradation with the APU performance parameters. Using the operating data from the existing sensors of the aircraft, the transient model can identify the degradation. Two indicators are developed to quantify the degradation level of the starter. The results enable decision making for predictive maintenance management and warrant safe operation of the APU system in aircraft. |
