| Abstract | Three Rolls-Royce Derwent VIII aero engines were investigated for vibrations, which in sone cases were found unacceptable. Oscillations in the fuel system were suggested as the cause of combustion unsteadiness and consequently engine vibrations. Measuring the fuel oscillations in fuel lines and engine vibrations (in co-operation with the Instruments Laboratory) did not show any convincing correlation between these two phenomena. The vibration was therefore attributed to mechanical causes. The engine which was unacceptable for service was afterwards examined by the manufacturers (in Montreal) and the centre bearing was found to be at fault. |
