| Abstract | The growing use of glass as a cladding material finds many designers unfamiliar with its structural behaviour, which includes a sensitivity to rate and duration of loading. Prior to 1979, manufacturers' recommended glass thicknesses for any desired area were based almost entirely on the results of previous load tests, but in that year a set of charts relying also on stress analysis was introduced. A Canadian committee is working on design guidelines with the following objectives: to clarify decisions leading to consistent safety by applying limit states design concepts; to relate fluctuating wind pressures to the specified one- minute pressure referred to in design charts; and to review progress in supplementing empirical design by stress analysis and statistical strength theory associated with surface flaws. The influences of aspect ratio and weathering remain controversial; carefully designed experiments will be required to assist in quantifying their effects for design. |
