| Abstract | This report presents experimental results, which supplement those described in the report from the previous study on the Pocket Feed tilting pad journal bearing1. The Addendum consists of the following two tasks:
• measurements of the static and dynamic characteristics of the centre pivot bearing for load-between-pads (LBP) and load-on-pad (LOP) orientations, a bearing load of 3.82 kN (858 Ibf) and a range of speeds up to 16,500 rpm.
• measurements of combined pad pivot and shell deflections.
These tasks were carried out on the same bearing as was used in the previous study. The test bearings have a diameter of 0.0889m (3.5 in), L/d ratio of 1.0, and pads with centre pivots. They have been tested with load between pads (LBP) and load on pad (LOP) orientations. The shaft speed ranged between 2000 and 16500 rpm, and the bearing load was 3.82 kN (858 Ibf).
The following operating parameters have been measured:
• bearing operating temperature
• power loss
• displacement of bearing centre
• stiffness and damping coefficients.
Apart from providing the bearing characteristics for the shaft speed beyond the previously used range, the measurements showed a very good repeatability of both the steady state and dynamic results.
The measurements of the pivot deflection do not show any hysteresis. For the loads on pad up to 2500 Ibf the measurements agree well with the predictions. However, at the higher loads, the formulae overestimate the pivot deflection (underestimate pivot stiffness). |
