| Abstract | STOL and VTOL wind tunnel model testing is placing new demands on wind tunnel techniques. Wind tunnel interference correction methods of old have become invalid for conditions that involve high lift and low forward speed. Recently developed correction methods are useful mainly in avoiding tunnel interference; they become inconvenient to use and uncertain when applied to actual test data.
A novel and simple to use wind tunnel interference correction method is indicated whereby "equivalent" free air conditions can be determined for measuring test data. The method relies entirely on measured pressures and a prior calibration in a known stream and is entirely independent of the degree of tunnel constraint.
The calibration is illustrated and compared by means of standard pressure data of the NACA 0015 wing and of an NRC-built NACA 0015 section wing.
The correction method is then applied to a test case. The example chosen is the NRC 12" fan-in-wing model in the 10' x 20' propulsion wind tunnel. Typical data correction trends are indicated.
The method appears to be particularly well suited for estimating interference corrections of STOL and VTOL models because it is valid even at very low air speeds. |
