Abstract | This report examines several mechanical problems with the existing fin actuators on the underwater vehicle "C-SCOUT", and recommends several possible solutions. The problems include: watertightness, size, quality of components (motor, gearbox, position encoder), and location of the fin module. The solutions include improvements to the existing design and incorporation of ideas from other vehicles. The solutions are ranked according to the criteria: available torque, system size, watertightness, price, and electronic controllability. The report concludes with a recommended solution. |
