Abstract | The design and fabrication of the initial prototype for any new concept always presents many challenges and opportunities for the designers and engineers. For this project, the prototype specifications included vehicular economy, versatility, efficiency, and reliability. For a technology test platform, such as this, it is reliability which is both most crucial and yet most difficult to maintain. This issue is certainly amplified in the case of an AUV since all mechanical and electrical systems must operate in a submerged environment.As with any engineering design, the development of C-SCOUT has been an iterative process. Through the implementation of proper design methodologies, it is possible to streamline this process to maximize project efficiency through the minimization of re-design and fabrication. The C-SCOUT concept combines low cost, modularity, and multi-mission capability, which makes it the ideal, affordable AUV for research and development work. To ensure the great potential of this unique autonomous underwater vehicle is realized, it is essential that the design, fabrication and documentation of work between successive designers and engineers continue with consistency. |
