Abstract | Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) helps reduce errors by providing an accurate transfer of member sizes and locations.CIM Steel Integration Standards version 2 (CIS/2) format enables the EDI amongst all parties of the steel supply chain for the steel-framed structures. CIS/2 has now been implemented as a file import or export module by many steel design, analysis, engineering, and fabrication software packages. There are potential cost savings in using the CIS/2 over the paper based transfer of design documents. The major benefit of data transfer through CIS/2 is that the hours normally required for detailing and checking for errors are greatly reduced resulting in cost savings throughout the project since erection could begin sooner and occupancy could occur earlier. Apart from enabling the exchange of data between software applications, CIS/2 can also be used in construction applications, for example tracking of structural steel elements. The presentation provides an overview of economic benefits using CIS/2 and the business challenges that prevent its widespread usage. |
