| Abstract | The possibility of extending the icing season by refrigerating one of the test beds in the Engine Laboratory has been considered from time to time for the past two years. The present memo is in accordance with a meeting on 18 March, 1955, and sets out the following:
a) The estimated performance of the existing Low Temperature Lab. refrigeration plant and surplus coils with an engine of 159 lb./sec. mass flow.
b) The plant requirements to equal this performance with a mass flow of 280 lb./sec.
c) Plant requirements for 50°F temperature depression at 280 lb./sec. mass flow.
d) The performance of the plant in b) and c) with reduced flows.
e) Air pressure drop through coils in b) and c) not to exceed 1 inch of water.
f) Comments on defrosting coils.
Using a coil configuration Fig. (2) that satisfies requirement e) above, item a), the 139 lb./sec. requirement has been worked out in detail. Items b), c), and d) have been more or less scaled off from this. |
