Abstract | The PyroLIBS system is a next-generation technology, capable of direct, continuous, and real-time measurement of molten material composition. Based on the principle of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, PyroLIBS can be directly integrated with a process vessel. It is being developed collaboratively by Hatch and the National Research Council of Canada. An overview of applications to the copper flowsheet, particularly Peirce-Smith converting, is presented, with expected value on the order of several millions USD per year per system. PyroLIBS has not yet been fully commercialized in the copper industry, for which the authors are currently seeking smelter partners for in-plant piloting. |
