Abstract
Canbra oil (rapeseed oil containing no erucic acid) was fed to rats as 20% by weight in a purified basal diet to determine its effect on food consumption, body weight gain and tissue fatty acid composition. This oil contained only 2.7% more saturated fatty acids than did rapeseed oil, but was associated with food consumption and weight gains similar to those obtained with olive oil or a mixture of lard and olive oil. No further enhancement of weight gains was attained by the addition to canbra oil of tripalmitin, tristearin, palm oil or lard. The total tissue fatty acids of rats fed canbra oil contained a lower concentration of palmitic acid than did the rats fed rapeseed oil. There was sufficient linoleic acid in canbra oil to provide relatively high concentrations of linoleic and arachidonic acids in liver lipids. In this study canbra oil appeared to be as nutritionally satisfactory as any other oil tested.
