Abstract | An experimental evaluation of a new method of using heat transfer measurements as the basis for determining local wall shear stresses is described. In this method, the wall under consideration was composed of a low thermal conductivity substrate which was covered with a very thin copper sheet. A laser beam from a steerable 30J pulsed dye laser was then used to rapidly heat a small portion of the copper sheet and the temperature-time variation of the heated surface spot on the copper sheet following cessation of irradiation was used as a basis for determining the local wall shear stress. In order to evaluate this method the well documented flow over a flat plate was investigated in a wind tunnel. |
