Abstract
Ultrasonic NDT techniques using surface-acoustic-waves (SAW) are increasingly used for the testing and evaluation of different materials. Such waves are usually generated and detected by piezoelectric transducers coupled to the surface to be inspected by wedge-prisms of precisely chosen vertex angle. This technique is however not very practical because it can be applied only on flat surfaces, requires skillful prism positioning for good surface coupling, and necessitates different prisms for different materials. Immersion techniques (see, for instance, ref. 4) are thus becoming more popular for surface inspection by leaky Rayleigh waves, despite the strong attenuation introduced by the liquid particularly at high frequencies.
