Abstract
The structural integrity of offshore platforms can be best checked by ultrasonic means. The number of joints and their variable geometry call for a new, more productive method of inspection. An ultrasonic phased array offers improvement in the number of scanning angles, speed, and higher probability, of defect detection. A 32-element immersion coupled linear array operating at 2.25 MHz is described. The system controller, transmitter and receiver modules, based on the STD bus, are addressed. Some novel solutions in the steering circuitry using a software controlled processor to set the steering angles and focussing are discussed. Design consideration, diagnostics, beam profiling, data display, and application of the array is reported.
