| Abstract | This report describes the operation of the NRC Twin Otter atmospheric research aircraft in the 2002 Soil Moisture-Atmosphere Coupling Experiment (SMACEX) conducted near Ames, Iowa, over the period June 15 to July 6, 2002. The aircraft was instrumented to measure the vertical fluxes of sensible and latent heat, momentum, CO2 and ozone, along with supporting meteorological and radiometric data. Sixteen project flights were flown, in which a total of 423 flux runs were conducted on six flight tracks covered by mostly com and soybean crops. Thirty-four soundings were also accomplished to profile atmospheric conditions above the project area. This final report documents the flight program, describes the instrumentation aboard the aircraft, and presents a summary of the run-averaged data from each flux run. It also includes a number of graphical presentations to assist in the interpretation of data collected. |
