Abstract
This project evaluated the effectiveness of ventilation strategies to control fire and smoke spread for a road tunnel. The original strategy was developed at the time of the tunnel design (1964) but was revised following a recent fire. The scientific-based validation of the strategy included both numerical and experimental studies. The numerical study used the Fire Dynamic Simulator model to investigate smoke ventilation in tunnels. The experimental study provided the necessary initial and boundary conditions for the Computational Fluid Dynamics model. The results include recommendations for improving the safety of the tunnel.
