Abstract
Polyvinyl chloride is increasingly used in rigid or semi- rigid formulations for such outdoor applications as extruded siding, window sash, gutters, downspouts, and exterior cladding. Ultimate consumer acceptance for these and other outdoor applications will depend upon the ability of PVC to retain its physical, mechanical, and aesthetic qualities over long periods of time, perhaps 15-20 years. In spite of the work to improve their weathering, PVC products still undergo considerable deterioration on long-term outdoor service, the most common types being discoloration, migration or loss of plasticizer, opacification, and embrittlement and impairment of mechanical properties.
