Abstract
Building codes are an essential part of the construction industry; they define how to construct safe, durable and reliable structures. Information technologies provide new opportunities for accessing building codes and for simplifying their use: Canada has a long history in the research projects as well as commercial products related to the computer representation of design standards and building codes in the Canadian context. Examples of the activities include enabling technologies such as compact disks, hypertext models, expert systems, minicode generation, classification systems, and CAD interfaces.
