| Résumé | Railways operating in Canada face extreme winter weather conditions including cold temperatures, snow and ice. These conditions affect the safety of employees and the public in general, while reducing the overall efficiency of operations. With the sponsorship and participation of the Canadian railway industry, a study was performed to review and prioritize winter issues affecting railroading in Canada. The study consisted of a literature review, interviews with key railway personnel, and site visits to several train yards. Several issues stand out as being especially problematic and widespread in Canada: frozen switches, broken rails, wheel shelling, air brake performance, hump yard performance, and the performance and reliability of distributed power. |
