| Résumé | Each year around 6 Mt of paper waste is generated in Canada, accounting for more than 1/3 of all waste in the country. Among them, the hard-to-recycle laminated and coated paper and cardboard are the main components and only 25% is recycled. These paper waste can’t be upcycled or closeloop recycled and ends up in landfills.
NRC developed an innovative and cost-effective methodology to convert paper waste into value added carbon materials, which includes a waste pre-treatment method and a carbonization process. The NRC methodology provides several advantages compared to those carbonization strategies published in literatures such as accepting waste streams with a high degree of organic contamination and providing high carbon yield and carbon content. The obtained carbon materials could be interesting for some potential industrial applications while supporting Canada-wide Net Zero Waste, promoting circularity and diverting paper waste from landfill. |
