Résumé | Plant cells in culture might be expected to produce the secondary metabolites—such as alkaloids, terpenes, steroids and phenols—characteristic of the whole plant. In fact this is seldom if ever the case; only rarely do plant cell cultures produce significant amounts of extractives. Apparently the potential for chemical biotransformations leading to these extractives is not being realized by the cells in most cultures. Yet there are obvious reasons for wishing to develop certain biotransformation capabilities in cultured plant cells: for example, the production of pharmaceuticals and optically active compound. In this paper we wish to discuss those biotransformations in plant tissue culture which proceed in the direction of components of increasing, complexity. Biotransformations of a degradative type are dealt with elsewhere. |
