Résumé | Photometric measurements of the partial pressure of oxygen in the graphite furnace have been made utilizing a sensitive and selective chemiluminescent reaction with phosphorus vapor. Oxygen is present many orders of magnitude in excess of equilibrium pressures expected from a consideration of the reaction: 2C + O2 → 2CO. Reactivity of the graphite substrate is the prime mediator in controlling the partial pressure of oxygen. An equally efficient scavenging of oxygen in a tantalum tube furnace was also noted. The implications of these observations for the interpretation of atomization mechanisms are discussed. |
