Résumé | Polyether polyols used in the manufacture of polyurethane foams are analyzed by reversed-phase liquid chromatography and size-exclusion chromatography. In reversed-phase liquid chromatography, a water-acetonitrile gradient elution method is developed using ultraviolet (UV) detection at 200 nm to analyze polyols. A deficient sample is quantitatively analyzed with a simultaneous subtraction of the gradient baseline from the sample chromatogram. High-speed reversed-phase liquid chromatography using a column 5 cm in length packed with 3-µm particles decreases the separation time to less than 6 min, compared to 35 min using a conventional column 25 cm in length packed with 5-µm particles. A deficiency of high molecular weight compounds in an industrial polyol-glycol mixture is detected by highperformance size-exclusion chromatography using a single poly(styrene/divinylbenzene) column with tetrahydrofuran as eluent. Separation of polyether polyols is achieved in less than 8 min in an isocratic mode. |
