Résumé | In response to the requirements set out in SAE AS5562, the National Research Council Canada has invested significant effort in expanding the Altitude Icing Wind Tunnel operating envelope to provide ice crystal, mixed phase and rain conditions in the test section. These environments are challenging to create as they require fundamentally different mechanical systems and calibration instrumentation than those for classic supercooled liquid droplet environments. This document offers guidance on the creation of these conditions in a closed-circuit, temperature-controlled wind tunnel environment based on the experiences at the NRC Altitude Icing Wind Tunnel. The discussion includes droplet size and water content measurement techniques, variables to consider during calibration, and challenges that still need to be addressed. |
