Résumé | Chip segmentation results in a cyclic variation of machining forces, leading to vibration, accelerated tool wear, and surface integrity change. In this paper, experimental and numerical studies were carried out to investigate the effect of chip segmentation on machining-induced residual stresses during the turning of Ti6Al4V. A finite element-based model that coupled the thermal and mechanical phenomena during machining was developed to simulate chip segmentation and predict machining-induced residual stress. It was found that the chip segmentation promotes an increase in the predicted machining forces and the compressive residual stress relative to non-segmental chip formation. |
