Résumé | Laser ultrasonics is an emerging technology for monitoring a wide range of metallurgical processes and materials parameters in situ by non-contact measurements. We have purchased the first laser ultrasonic sensor system dedicated and tailored to the Gleeble thermo-mechanical simulator for the live analysis of microstructures evolution during processing of samples. Attenuation and velocity of the ultrasound wave were used to investigate grain growth, recrystallization and phase transformation kinetics in low alloyed steels. Measurements were validated with classical metallographic microstructure characterization techniques. Based on these investigations the accuracy, precision, limitations and further potential of this new sensor technology will be discussed. |
