Résumé | This paper presents the history of the research in fuselage lap joint corrosion that has been carried out over the years at the Institute for Aerospace Research of the National Research Council Canada. The development of a new enhanced visual inspection technique, D Sight, is documented as well as the studies that were carried out to determine the effect that corrosion has on the structural integrity of fuselage lap joints. These studies showed that the volumetric increase associated with the corrosion products was 6.45 (molecular volume ratio) times greater than the volume of the parent material lost, which resulted in a significant increase in the stress in the vicinity of the rivet holes. Lightly corroded lap joint specimens demonstrated close to 50% reduction in fatigue life. The results of the IAR work have significantly affected efforts to change the approach to aircraft corrosion maintenance. |
