Résumé | The primary objectives of the Canadian Freezing Drizzle Experiment (CFDE) are a.) to characterize icing environments associated with freezing precipitation, and b.) to develop better techniques for forecasting such events. Climatological studies have indicated that Newfoundland and the Great Lakes area are the areas with the highest frequency of freezing precipitation in North America. Measurement campaigns have been conducted out of Newfoundland (1995), and Ottawa (1996/97 and 1997/98) using National Research Council aircraft. Greater extremes were observed in clouds in the Great Lakes area than in Newfoundland, with higher liquid water contents at colder temperatures. In contrast to the East Coast measurements, ice crystals often co-existed with the drizzle drops. During the study out of Ottawa, runback icing on the upper wing surface was observed on three occasions in cord-wise parallel rivulets, and tail icing was observed on more than one occasion. CFDE is providing useful measurements for developing new schemes to forecast aircraft icing, and a scheme developed and calibrated with aircraft data is presently used for operational forecasts of conventional icing. The field measurements are also being used to validate a new precipitation type parameterization scheme, which will more accurately determine where supercooled large droplet icing occurs. |
