Résumé
Composite castings were prepared using commercial grade ZA27 as matrix material and either water atomized low carbon steel particles or air atomized aluminum particles. Ceramic particles such as alumina were also used in order to compare the behavior between metallic and ceramic particles. In order to compensate for matrix - particle density variations, rheocasting techniques were employed. These techniques produced castings with particle contents up to 20% vol. Near net shape forming of the composites at elevated temperatures (semi solid state) eliminated the casting porosities and produced a cohesive bond between the matrix and the particles. X-ray probe analysis of the particle matrix interface were conducted. Finally, a standard dry sand abrasion test was used to evaluate the strength of the particle - matrix interface and the increase in wear resistance that can be produced by adding particles to ZA27. Results show that even under severe mechanical solicitation, the particle-matrix bond held up. Furthermore, the use of large alumina particles produced a significant increase in wear resistance.
