Résumé | The first attempts at the somatic hybridization of plants was made early in the present century by Winkler, Buester, Micher and others. Somatic hybridization can be defined as the fusion of non-germ (body) cells. Michel (1973) demonstrated that the fusion of homo-and heterspecific protoplasts (cells without cell walls) could be accomplished after treatment in sodium nitrate solutions. Although the possibility of para-sexual hybrids were recognized at this time, it could not be realized because the fusion products would never survive beyond the initial fusion. |
