Résumé | Laser consolidation process produces net-shape functional metallic parts layer by layer directly from a CAD model by using a laser beam to melt the substrate along with the injected powder. This process provides the capability to produce functional complex components with unique design. In this paper, laser consolidation of 420 stainless steel (S.S.) and H-13 tool steel was investigated to build nozzles with embedded cooling channels for plastic injection molding. The microstructures of laser consolidated H13 and 420 S.S. were examined using optical microscope and SEM. Mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the laser consolidated materials were evaluated. Detailed investigation was conducted to use laser consolidation process to build the plastic injection nozzles with embedded muliple spiral cooling channels, which are very difficult or even impossible to make using conventional manufacturing methods. |
