Résumé | Lignin is the second most abundant natural polymer on earth after cellulose. Very large amounts of lignin are generated as a by-product of the pulp and paper and bioethanol industries. Numerous studies on lignin-based composites have been conducted. However, lignin complex and heterogeneous structure, in addition to chemistry are highly dependent on lignin sources and processing conditions, have mostly resulted in unsatisfactory results. Nevertheless, sheet extrusion foaming of blends of polystyrene and lignin has been performed and promising low-density foam results have been obtained. This presentation will focus on the morphology of such blends and their impact on the processing conditions and resulting foam structure. Preliminary results on the application of lignin for expandable polystyrene (EPS) will also be presented. |
