Résumé | This paper reports on numerical simulations and model experiments which demonstrate that it is in the transient conditions prior to operating in the indirect mode that cause the greatest hazards to the tug's stability. The impact of design variables (such as damping characteristics of the hull), and operating variables (such as the length and material of the tow line) are explored in the context of establishing the safe limits for this type of operation. |
