A simple procedure for the prediction of the fatigue crack growth rate under variable amplitude loading

The constant amplitude data for Man-Ten and RQC-100 steels were used to predict the variable amplitude data obtained for the SAE round-robin test data. The procedure does not take into account the influence of the order of succession of the peaks and valleys but provides adequate predictions for short loading blocks histories in the long crack region. However, excessively fast growth rates have been observed for the short crack region. This behaviour can be explained with the crack closure concept. The short crack effect was found to be more pronounced for the lowest yield material and for the lowest load ratio loading histories. These two observations are in agreement with the crack closure concept.
