Résumé | The significant changes in internal stress intensities due to traffic and extreme climatic loads combined with corrosion-induced deterioration raise many challenges to the structural performance evaluation of aging bridge elements. Extreme temperatures and their high variations can seriously affect composite steel girder bridges' performance, especially for continuous multi-span bridges. A nonlinear finite element model of continuous steel-girders bridges is developed and validated. The investigation covers the effects of extreme climate loads such as elevated and extreme temperatures on safety and serviceability. It is found that the load over capacity ratio (D/C) increases and exceeds 1.0 over interior supports, which leads to a significant reduction of the load-carrying capacity and results in a possible state of instability or even partial or complete collapse of the bridge system. |
