| Résumé | Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are internationally proven strategies for managing flood and erosion risk in river basins, while delivering a range of co-benefits. Although many Canadian communities are vulnerable to fluvial flood and erosion hazards, there is hesitancy in adopting NbS on scales commensurate with the risk. This paper outlines efforts to fill knowledge gaps and overcome technical barriers to wider uptake of NbS in Canada’s river basins. Challenges and opportunities are identified based on a literature review and interviews with stakeholders and experts. Regional drivers of flooding and erosion are summarized and linked to considerations for NbS in Canada’s diverse river basin settings. Pilot studies are being developed to assess the performance of different types of NbS and to inform the development of design guidance. |
